Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
