New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
