The network's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
