The Japanese Economic Output Declines as Exports Are Hit by American Trade Duties

Japan's economy has shown a decline for the initial time in six quarters, mainly caused by declining overseas shipments because of recent American trade duties.

Group of Seven Economic Standings

The Japanese economy has become the initial Group of Seven economy to announce an economic contraction in the most recent quarter.

With the US yet to release its GDP data for Q3 2025, the current Group of Seven growth standings display:

  • France: 0.5 percent quarterly growth
  • United Kingdom: 0.1 percent
  • Canada: 0.1 percent (preliminary figure)
  • German economy: zero growth
  • Italy: 0%
  • Japanese economy: negative 0.4 percent

Travel Shares Decline during Political Rift with China

Alongside the GDP decline, Japan is dealing with an intensifying diplomatic conflict with China concerning Taiwan.

Stocks in Japan's tourism and retail firms have dropped noticeably after China urged its nationals to avoid traveling to Japan.

This action by Chinese authorities intensified a political dispute that was initiated by comments from Tokyo's recently appointed PM about the possibility of sending forces in the case of a potential Chinese invasion on Taiwan.

The development triggered a surge of selling across Japan's tourism-related shares.

  • The Tokyo Disneyland operator shares fell by 5.7%
  • Isetan Mitsukoshi plummeted by 11.3 percent
  • Japan Airlines fell by 3.75%

"The ongoing dispute over Taiwan and Beijing's travel warning discouraging visits to Japan brings near-term challenges for consumer-facing sectors.

"Chinese visitors represent roughly 25% of Japan's international visitors, making department stores, luxury retail, and tourism services especially vulnerable."

Economic Decline Details

Japanese GDP dropped by 0.4% in the third quarter, as industrial exports were hit by tariffs imposed by the US this year.

Exports were a primary factor of the contraction, dropping by 1.2% compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a the same period last year.

Earlier this year, the American government had proposed Japan with a additional 25 percent tariff on its goods, which was later lowered to 15% when the two countries reached a trade deal.

Private demand also declined, by 0.3 percent quarter-on-quarter.

On an annual basis, Japan's real gross domestic product contracted by 1.8 percent in the three months through September.

"The Japanese economic situation was strong in the initial six months of this year and the latest GDP data showed that growth is halted temporarily.

I anticipate Japan's economy to be returning on a moderate recovery trend going forward."

The White House has recently recognized the effect of tariffs on US consumers, lowering tariffs on imported food products including beef, tomatoes, coffee and fruits amid growing concerns about increasing costs.
