Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has unveiled what is being described as the largest changes to address unauthorized immigration "in decades".

The new plan, patterned after the stricter approach adopted by Scandinavian policymakers, makes refugee status conditional, restricts the review procedure and includes visa bans on states that block returns.

Refugee Status to Become Temporary

Individuals approved for protection in the UK will only be allowed to stay in the country temporarily, with their case evaluated every 30 months.

This signifies people could be sent back to their home country if it is judged "safe".

The scheme mirrors the policy in Denmark, where asylum seekers get temporary residence documents and must submit new applications when they end.

Authorities states it has begun assisting people to go back to Syria willingly, following the removal of the Syrian government.

Asylum recipients will also need to be settled in the UK for two decades before they can apply for permanent residence - up from the existing five years.
