Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at OpenAI, just several days after a collection of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.

Summers commented in a release that he was "appreciative for the chance to have served, enthusiastic about the prospects of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their progress".

The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The newly public messages showed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of his 2019 arrest for suspected human trafficking of young people.

In additional comments, the technology organization said it respected Summers' decision to depart.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he provided to the Board," the company commented.

Legislative Background

This news follows after both chambers of the legislative branch voted on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would compel the Department of Justice to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will afterward head to the office of President Trump for approval. Trump has indicated he intends to endorse the measure, after modifying his view on the issue following pushback from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of financier-linked emails released by the Congressional committee recently mentioned multiple well-known personalities in the financier's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The emails indicated that Summers and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to introduce the official to notable international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the messages were made available with the public, the former official stated he accepted "total ownership for my misguided choice to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he hoped "to restore confidence and fix relationships with the persons nearest to me".

Previous Positions

The economist occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; functioning as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He led the institution from five years and is still a professor there. When declaring his departure from public duties earlier on this week, he indicated he would persist with his educational duties.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in the capital where Summers was a researcher, announced that Summers was not associated with the organization.

He became part of the leadership of OpenAI, which makes the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO OpenAI's head.
