Chicago's MLB Team Sign Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Contract.
In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract with the high-profile player.
Financial Terms and Player Perks
The agreement includes a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with salaries of sixteen million for the next season and $17M for the following year.
Notably, Murakami's compensation can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- $1 million for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
- $500,000 for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for ranking between fourth and tenth.
- An identical bonus for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.
The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his consent and makes him a unrestricted player at the termination of the deal. Extra provisions include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between the U.S. and Japan.
Transfer Payment and Team Legacy
As part of the signing, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization get a supplemental fee of any triggered salary escalators.
Murakami will become the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the White Sox, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami during their time in Japan.
