Books I Haven't Finished Reading Are Stacking by My Bedside. Could It Be That's a Benefit?
This is a bit uncomfortable to admit, but here goes. Several titles rest next to my bed, all only partly finished. Inside my phone, I'm some distance through over three dozen listening titles, which looks minor next to the 46 ebooks I've abandoned on my digital device. The situation does not include the expanding stack of pre-release editions beside my coffee table, competing for endorsements, now that I have become a established author myself.
From Persistent Reading to Intentional Letting Go
On the surface, these stats might appear to support recent thoughts about current concentration. But at what other time in our past have we ever had such immediate entry to so many amazing masterpieces, anytime we want? A glut of riches meets me in each library and on each device, and I strive to be deliberate about where I focus my attention. Could “abandoning” a novel (shorthand in the literary community for Incomplete) be rather than a mark of a weak focus, but a selective one?
Choosing for Understanding and Self-awareness
Particularly at a period when book production (consequently, acquisition) is still led by a certain social class and its issues. Although reading about individuals different from ourselves can help to build the ability for compassion, we additionally choose books to reflect on our personal journeys and role in the universe.
